Tree Hugger Hammocks Guide

Helpful buying advice and portable product tips

Described by their makers as "The most comfortable, lightweight, backpacking hammocks on the planet", Tree Hugger hammocks are breathable, lightweight products.
Tree Hugger hammocks are designed to suit buyers who need a light, thin and packable hammock that they can sling up at whim - between trees, rocks, off the back of an RV, or wherever fits.
The company currently offers just two hammock models (below) - one for single swingers and a larger double hammock. Both are available in one of six attractive two-tone color combinations.
What sets the Tree Hugger company apart from close competitors (such as Eagles Nest Outfitters) is its dedication to all things environmental. Its ethos is all about having minimal impact on the environment (thus the popularity of its tree straps, which users of other hammock brands often buy), and doing community work.
Note: Tree Hugger beds are flexible and adaptable portable hammocks. However they do not come with the kind of accessories and insulation systems that hardcore campers require when sleeping outdoors throughout the year (such as those offered by Clark and Hennessy).
It's best to therefore consider Tree Huggers more suitable more for activites like dayhikes, a day at the beach, garden lazing and RV extras.

Key Features

Each TreeHugger hammock offers the same user-friendly features. Learn more about them below:
Breathable and durable
Tree Hugger hammocks are made from nylon microfiber, a breathable and mildew/mold-proof fabric. The firm has treated this material to be UV- resistant, while also using color-fast dies to color it. This means a Tree Hugger's colors should fade little through exposure to the sun. You can even machine wash them!

Tip

Remember that Tree Hugger beds do not include tree slaps as standard.
Easy set-up
TreeHugger hammocks are truly simple to set-up, in part because they don't even use ropes/lines; instead the end of each hammock features a sewn-in carabiner holder. Just wrap one tree strap (sold separately) around a tree, thread through its end loop and pull ut tight. Then clip your hammock's end carabiner to one of the loops sewn into the strap (these clipping loops 4 inches apart so you have plenty of choice). Repeat with your second tree strap to create a bed between trees!
This quick TreeHugger-produced video demonstrates the process:
Modular approach
Unlike full camping systems, when you buy a Tree Hugger you get just the bed itself, two carabiners and an attached stuff sack. Extra accessories such as rain tarp (covers) and tree straps, are sold separately. This is useful because if you already own such components (or don't want them), it means you aren't paying money for kit you don't need.
Eco-friendly
It's not really a feature as such, but eco buyers should like that a proportion of Tree Hugger's profits are donated to environmental organizations and its products are strictly only made by companies with what it calls "reputable" human rights practices.

Brief Reviews of Tree Hugger Hammocks

Tree Hugger's range is as minimal as it gets; just choose between a single or double hammock, then add any accessories you require.

Single Hammock

TreeHugger hammocks single reviewThe company's single hammock is self-explanatory - it is a portable hammock designed for one person to snooze in.
This person can weigh up to 400 pounds (180kg), with the bed itself measuring 4'8" (142cm) wide by 10' (305cm) long. Like the double model (below), this hammock is supplied with two US-made aluminium alloy carabiners (palm-sized metal connecting loops with sprung gates) and an attached stuff sack (in which to store your torch, book etc. when the hammock is hung).
This model weighs just 15 ounces (425g) and includes a standard one-year warranty.
Suitable for:
Individuals looking to relax comfortably during the daytime.
Expect to pay: US $48.50

Double Hammock

TreeHugger hammocks double reviewThe company's double bed is the same length as its single hammock (10' or 305cm) but significantly wider, measuring 6'8" (203cm) from side to side. It can hold the same weight of 400 pounds (180kg), so if you and your snoozing partner are a little heavy you should think carefully before buying this model.
Like the single hammock above, the double Tree Hugger includes two carabiners and an attached stuff sack. It is backed by a one-year warranty and all-in weighs 19oz (538g). Accessories such as tree straps and rain flys are sold separately (see below).
Suitable for:
Couples looking to relax together during the day (in the yard, at the beach, outdoors etc.), or individual snoozers with broad shoulders who want more room.
Expect to pay: US $58.50

Key Accessories

These Tree Hugger bits and pieces are sold separately to the hammock beds. Unless you have tree straps from a previous hammock system you will need these at least.

TreeHugger Hammock Straps

TreeHugger hammock straps reviewTreeHugger Straps are the components that actually help you hang your bed from trees, rocks, poles or other sturdy nearby objects.
Made from strong 1-inch-wide webbing with a UV coating, these are designed to be wrapped around trees or other objects 10 - 20 feet (3-6m) apart. These 100% tree-friendly straps measure 7' 8" (233cm) long and can support up to 400 pounds or 180kg.
Expect to pay: US $17.50
Where to buy it: find TreeHugger straps on Amazon here

Tree Hugger Rain Fly

Tree Hugger rain fly reviewIf you want to be protected from the rain when chilling in your rocking bed (after all, who can predict the weather?), a rain fly is what you need.
Weighing just 14oz (400g), this is the company's own model. It is made from durable waterproof rip-stop nylon and includes its own stuff sack for easy carrying.
This Tree Hugger movie shows how you hang it up:
Expect to pay: US $68.50

Treehugger Carabiners

Should you lose the carabiners supplied with your Tree Hugger bed, these are available to buy separately. Note: these carabiners are not designed for climbing use, so don't risk it.
Expect to pay: US $3.50

Kelsyus Portable Hammock Guide

Is a Kelsyus worthy of your cash? Find out here

The Kelsyus portable hammock is an all-in-one 'hammock with stand' set that its creators have designed primarily for use at the beach, by the pool and on camping trips (as an occasional leisure hammock, not necessarily your main sleeping bed).
Packable in their own shoulder bags, which are supplied as standard, Kelsyus hammocks offer hands-free portability and do not require any tools to set-up or take down.
The installation process is simple: you stretch out a Kelsyus hammock's sprung metal frame, click this into shape, and then clip each end of the hammock bed to the frame (see video below).
Produced in Virginia Beach, USA, the company's hammocks include its most well-known model, named the 'Kelsyus Portable Hammock', more breathable mesh versions, a larger double hammock for slumbering with a friend or family member, and even a water hammock.
But are Kelysus portable hammocks sturdy and long-lasting? Do customers rave about their build quality? Check the guide below to learn more.

Key Features

Each Kelsyus portable hammock utilizes a largely similar design methodology (except the inflatable water model) and so offers roughly the same features and benefits. These include:
Simple set-up
Kelsyus' freestanding hammock frames have a quite ingenious design in terms of their set up and disassembly. You just open up the frame, spread it, lock the brackets at each end, then connect the main bed section, all of which takes just 2 minutes (see video futher down page).
Packable
Each Kelsyus product comes with its own special carry bag, into which the frame and bed fit easily when not in use.
Flexibility
While Kelsyus hammocks are too heavy for truly 'portable' use (e.g. hiking or camping), they are very useable and still relatively portable products (i.e. you can easily carry a Kelsyus from your car to the beach).
Because you don't need trees to hang them from, as with traditional hammocks, Kelsyus models are good for a massive range of events and locations: at the beach, picnics, the backyard, all day races, tournaments, festivals, by the pool, even inside the house!

Brief Reviews of Kelsyus Hammocks

Not sure which Kelsyus portable hammock is right for you? Check out the product reviews below to better understand their features, differences, and what users say about each.

Kelsyus Portable Hammock

Kelsyus portable hammock reviewBilled largely by its makers as a portable beach hammock, this key Kelysus model is the company's lightest folding hammock, weighing just 25lbs (11kg).
Its stand is made from steel, with nylon webbing stabilizer straps to connect the PVC-backed canvas bed material, which Kelysus claims can support up to 250 pounds (113kg). In terms of the space you will need for this bed, it measures 34 x 100.3 x 27 inches (86 x 254 x 68 cm) when set-up.
This short video shows how a Kelysus hammock is assembled/disassembled:
Customer feedback:
This hammock's online user reviews are, in general, very positive (the average score on Amazon at the time of writing is 4 out of 5). Owners say it is lightweight, portable, comfortable, and easy to set-up.

Tip

Watch your fingers when closing a Kelsyus hammock's frame!
However, it is worth mentioning that several customers who weigh over 180lbs (82kg) report that their butts hit or drag on the ground when laying in this product. This is due to the bed's material stretching. Others even say they feel uncomfortable because they can feel the actual poles. Suitable for:
Anyone weighing under 180lbs/82kg who wants a relatively portable hammock for taking to the beach, pool, on vacation, ball games etc.
Expect to pay: US $100-110.
Where to buy it: find the Kelsyus portable hammock here

Kelsyus Portable Hammock XL

kelsyus portable hammock XL reviewThis model is effectively the normal Kelsyus Portable Hammock above, only larger in size and with additional accessories supplied.
The frame of this XL is 15% bigger than the regular product, with Kelsyus claiming therefore the same canvas and steel frame construction can, with these dimensions, support a single adult who weighs up to 300 pounds (136kg) - compared to the regular model's 180lbs (82kg).
The usual compact carry bag with shoulder straps is provided, but with this hammock you also receive these extras:
  • Inflatable pillow for greater comfort
  • Built-in cup holder
  • Built-in magazine holder
Due to its greater size, this hammock weighs more than its regular sized cousin: 33.6 pounds (15kg) rather than 25lb/11kg.
Customer feedback:
User comments about this XL model are notably less positive than for Kelsyus's smaller portable hammock. While many customers say the XL is comfortable, rave about the company's customer support and like its sewn-in instructions, many others cite durability and weight issues. These include:
Strength: several reviewers say their hammock broke only the second or third time it was used due to the supporting bars snapping.
Support: other buyers, particularly those who weigh close to this hammock's allotted 300lb maximum, say the steel bars of the frame bent so much that they themselves were pretty much laid on the ground or the material stretched, with the same effect.
Expect to pay: US $110-120
Where to buy it: find the Kelsyus XL hammock here

Kelsyus Portable Mesh Hammock

kelsyus mesh hammock reviewThis mesh model is almost identical in design to the first regular-weight portable hammock above, only the usual bed material is made from a more breathable mesh and there is an extra accessory thrown in.
Like its non-mesh version, this bed weighs around 25lbs (11kg) and is designed to hold one adult weighing up to 250 pounds (113kg). Its mesh keeps any breeze flowing nicely around you, keeping you cooler on those warmer lazy days, plus here Kelsyus also includes the same inflatable pillow you get with the XL model.
Customer feedback:
While users like the easy set-up and design theory of this hammock, as with the original Kelsyus Portable above, the majority of the user reviews online at present are negative. That is because of problems that many experienced with the mesh material tearing at the ends.
However the manufacturer now reports to have addressed these issues and strengthened the material's seams. (To be sure, check out the latest customer comments about this hammock here on Amazon.)
Expect to pay: US $90-130
Where to buy it: find the Kelsyus Mesh here

Kelsyus Hammock Recliner

Kelsyus hammock recliner reviewThis model is advertised by Kelsyus as its most comfortable model. It features a rather unique three-position design, with which you can choose to sit up, sit sideways (for a little swing) or lay back and relax traditional hammock-style.
The idea is that this positional flexibility makes the bed easier to get in and out of than its competitors. (It also means you can enjoy relaxing on it with your feet lower than your head, as opposed to the 'feet up' position that can put make some older users' feet go to sleep!)
The Recliner is supplied with an inflatable pillow, storage pocket and carry bag. It is designed to support the same weight as the company's other regular-size hammocks: namely 250lbs or 113kg. However the weight of this product itself is greater than other Kelsyus beds; it weighs in at a more hefty 42.7lbs (19.4kg). So while it is portable in the 'pack it in the car trunk' sense, it is probably too weighty to take hiking.
Customer feedback:
This product is newer than those above, so it is difficult to find customer comments about it online at present. The little feedback there is however is positive.
Suitable for:
Buyers looking for a comfy, adaptable hammock bed/chair. Not those whose main concern is portability.
Expect to pay: US $120-190
Where to buy it: find the Kelsyus Recliner here

Kelsyus Floating Hammock

Kelsyus floating hammock reviewThis ingenious floating product slightly bends most people's definition of a hammock, but it is certainly an interesting concept and might well appeal if you like lazing around in your pool, on the lake or at the ocean.
Made from flexible mesh nylon, it features inflatable edges to support you in the water and a built-in half-moon shaped pillow. Its special Jet Valve technology means you can inflate it in seconds flat (even without a pump or a lot of puff).
Once in the water your mid-section simply hangs, suspended slightly under the surface. The sensation is one of rocking gently with the motion of the water. If you already love lazing on an inflatable lilo/mattress, this alternative approach might take your fancy.

Tip

Slightly deflate the pillow to avoid getting a sore neck when lying on your front.
The floating hammock is designed to support adults weighing up to 250lbs/113kg and, as you might imagine, the product itself is way lighter than those 'landlubber' beds above, clocking in at just 2.6lb/1.1kg. Customer feedback:
Users of this hammock love its lazy lounging comfort, light weight and packable portability. Unlike some reports above, heavier customers (such as one of 6'6" and 240 pounds) also say this model supports them just fine in the water.
Suitable for:
Water lovers heading off on vacation, to the pool, lake or out sailing, and who maybe want a smaller, more manageable alternative to larger inflatable airbeds.
Expect to pay: US $25-30
Where to buy it: find the floating hammock here

Kelsyus Floating Hammock Deluxe Version

Kelsyus water hammock deluxe reviewLike the original version above, this 'hang in the water' floating product is great for lazing in a pool, lake or ocean.
How does this deluxe Kelsyus water hammock differ from the original?
In 2 ways: its mesh material features an (arguably) more eye- pleasing tropical flowery pattern; and its carry bag is more advanced - containing separate compartments for your book, sunscreen, phone and so on.
Customer feedback:
This is almost identical to that of the normal water hammock above; in other words, highly positive.
Suitable for:
Water lovers who want a more manageable alternative to an inflatable airbed and like this product's pattern and assortment of carry bag compartments.
Expect to pay: US $30-40
Where to buy it: find the Deluxe floating hammock here

Large cotton rope hammock

This is it - the original Pawleys Island hammock as first envisioned by John Ward back in the day.
Pawleys Island hammocks large rope hammock reviewMade from almost a thousand feet (305 meters) of super-strong 3-ply cotton rope, this luxurious breezy bed is hand-woven using a lattice design. And because it is a large model - at 55 inches (140cm) across and 82 inches (208cm) long - it is wide enough to fit two lazy-rocking friends weighing up to 450lbs/204kg.
If you have the trees handy, this large bed includes a pair of the company's sturdy Zinc-plated tree hooks (or you could go for its more tree-friendly strap accessories or equivalents such as ENO's SlapStraps). Alternatively, you can check out one of the Pawley frames mentioned further down this page.
Customer feedback:
Generally speaking the vast majority of people who own this classic Pawley's Island hammock are very happy with their purchase.
They report that it is solid and sturdy, very comfortable and holds up well through all kinds of weather (note - we do not recommend leaving cotton hammocks hung outside in damp weather as cotton can rot over time).
On the negative side, there is not much to mention but there is a little. Occasional users claim that their beds' ropes unwound from the frames quickly. However these are small minority of owners and such defects are covered by the company's 90-day money back guarantee and year-long warranty.
Another couple of Amazon.com buyers claimed to have been sent packages that had "obviously been sent to someone else and returned". If in doubt, be sure to check the feedback on the retailer you buy from (in addition to Amazon itself, many third-party retailers also sell through Amazon.com - it's not clear in their reviews who the users above bought from).
Suitable for:
Couples or larger individuals looking for a large, comfortable, non-sweaty hanging bed for their garden, deck or yard.
Expect to pay: US $130-140
Where to buy it: find this large rope hammock on Amazon here.
You can also buy this bed from Pawleys Island direct, eBay, Home Depot and more.

Presidential cotton rope hammock

If you like the idea of the comfy double hammock above, but you're worried that even that might not be big enough when the kids or dogs also jump in, then this extra-large Presidential version could be the Pawleys bed for you.
Pawleys Island hammocks presidential rope hammock reviewAn extra 10 inches (25cm) wider than the large bed above, and with the same impressive weight limit of 450 pounds/204kg, this bed should support everything and everyone you can throw at it.
Described by its manufacturer as the "Cadillac" of its cotton rope hammocks, the Presidential really makes the most of the strength of its zinc-plated hanging accessories (this is where most of the stress is placed when laying in a hammock). Of course its main material is also up to Pawleys' usual strength, as this is again seriously sturdy '3-ply' cotton webbing.
Customer feedback:
Buyers generally love this huge hanging bed. It is not difficult to find owners talking about how they have owned, used and loved their Pawleys Presidential for many years, and they report that this particular model is just as "well made" and "easy to assemble" as you would hope.
It's worth noting, says one buyer, that you will probably need to enlist a friend's help to set this hammock up.
On the down side, one customer complained that the hardware broke when testing it with her family. Our tip: it is able to support 450lbs, so this bed should easily support most young families. However, if you and your partner are heavier than the norm and/or have older (so heavier) kids, it's worth considering this bed's 450lb maximum carefully before buying.
Suitable for:
Couples and young families.
Expect to pay: US $169.99
Where to buy it: find this Presidential hammock on Amazon here
You can also buy this bed from Pawleys Island direct, eBay, and more.

Large polyester rope hammock

Another gloriously seductive bright white bed, the difference between this large two-person hammock and the first mentioned above is its rope material; this bed's rope is made from polyester instead of cotton. This means more durability, as polyester is significantly more weather-, moisture- and therefore rot-proof than its cotton counterpart.
Pawleys Island hammocks polyester rope hammock reviewThe rope used for this bed is again hand-woven and spun in super sturdy three-ply style. Size-wise and in terms of how much weight it can support, this polyester hammock offers up exactly the same stats as the cotton version above: 55 inches (140cm) wide, 82 inches (208cm) long, and able to support people weighing up to a total of 450lbs or 204kg with ease.
It comes supplied with premium white-oak spreader bars (to flatten your lay) and hanging hardware including two Zinc-plated tree hooks.
Customer feedback:
This bed is well appreciated for its comfort and the durability that polyester offers. Described as way better than cheap foreign versions of the same, it is widely seen as a quality buy.
Suitable for:
Busy people who just want to hang it up and chill - rather than having the hassle of taking it down when not in use (as we recommend for cotton beds).
Expect to pay: US $150-160
Where to buy it: find this polyester bed here.

Large duracord rope hammock

If you don't like cotton's tendency to rot and you want the very best quality garden bed on the market, this high-end DuraCord hammock is the product for you.
Pawleys Island hammocks duracord hammock reviewFeaturing top-of-the-line rope, this sturdiest of hammocks is designed with toughness first and foremost in mind, but it is still perfectly soft enough under you to be comfortable as normal cotton.
This bed is the same single and two-person friendly size as the other rope hammocks above and supports the same maximum weight of 450lbs/204kg.
Customer feedback:
The vast majority of customers rave about this bed's mix of comfort and superb long-term durability.
One user reported they bought it, hung it out and left it out there in all kinds of weather for a whole six months, yet even after this time it looked like it had just been unwrapped. That said, users still sensibly recommend taking it in for the winter (after all, why take any chances when you're spending a fair chunk of cash on such a premium-level product?).
On the down side, one user said the rope disintegrated after just a year of use. Others just wish its price was a little cheaper.
Suitable for:
Any person or couple looking for a relaxing garden hammock that they won't need to worry about looking after.
Expect to pay: US $150-160
Where to buy it: find this DuraCord bed here or try Pawleys Island direct, eBay or Target.

Fabric: large quick-drying comfort hammock

Perfect for damp conditions like by the swimming pool, on or near the beach, or in stickier climates, this Pawleys Island quick-drying bed is made from a single layer of non-absorbent all-weather 'Sunbrella' fabric. This is rot, mold, fade and stain resistant, but still manages to be as comfily soft as cotton.
Pawleys Island hammocks fabric hammock reviewAs usual this bed features Pawleys' lovely white-oak spreader bars, finished in honey-gold varnish, and its hanging power comes from those sturdy zinc-plated tree hooks.
This bed is 55 inches (140cm) wide, 82 inches (208cm) long and supports up to 450lbs (204kg). It is also available in three color styles: Bessemer (brown earthy tones with a floral motif), Dupione Palm (a solid green), or Portland Dots (strong navy blue with grid lines of small white dots - shown right).
Customer feedback:
Pawleys' fabric beds are reviewed less online than the company's rope beds, but the feedback we did find on this bed was 100% positive. Owners claim this bed is beautiful and comfortable.
Suitable for:
Buyers who want to soak up some rays in comfort, particularly by the pool or in more humid climates (or maybe they just don't like the feel of 'holey' rope on their skin and prefer a solid material).
Expect to pay: US $189.99
Where to buy it: find it here.
You can also buy this bed from Pawleys Island direct and eBay.

Fabric: large quilted hammock

Offering a greater level of cushioned comfort, Pawleys' quilted fabric hammock features two sheets of cotton-soft all-weather fabric with a luxurious center of polyester filling.
Pawleys Island hammocks quilted hammock reviewAesthetic-wise, this two-person bed is all about the stripes, which run vertically from the head end to the toe. Three color themes are available: nautical cream n' blue (shown right), a red n' green garden theme, or the creamy pastel shades of so-called 'Regency Sand'.
This bed is super study (thanks to its use of components called 'rolled-rim' grommets to attach the hanging ropes rather than traditional but weaker telescopic versions) and features the same dimensions and weight capacity as the quick-dryers above.
Customer feedback:
This hammock is ultra comfortable - buyers just love it. Most people seem to buy a separate hammock stand and just hook this baby up to relax. Our research didn't uncover any negative customer comments about this bed.
Suitable for:
Folks who like to relax - alone or with a friend - in well-padded luxurious comfort.
Expect to pay: US $199.99
Where to buy it: find it here.
You can also buy this bed from Pawleys Island direct, eBay, WalMart and more.

Essential Accessories

Hammock stand

If you fancy one of the Pawleys Island hammocks here but don't have trees the right distance apart (approx. 2 feet wider than the full length of the hammock, so for most Pawleys this means a distance of 9 feet total), then a standalone hammock stand is the answer. This approach also allows you to move your bed around your yard during the day in order to catch, or avoid, every last one the sun's warming rays.
Pawleys Island hammock stand reviewPawleys' hammock stand is made from sturdy steel which is powder coated to make it fully rust and weather-proof. It uses a 'tri-beam' design and is built firmly with Pawleys Island hammocks in mind (however it should hold most other similarly sized garden hammocks too).
Best of all, this stand doesn't require any tools to set it up - thanks to its spring-pin assembly you just slot it together and it boings into place! (See this helpful YouTube video.) All you need it a little flat ground and you're ready to chill.
The stand is available in four different color finishes to help you match it to the rest of your existing garden or deck furniture. These are: forest green, silvery 'taupe', standard black or bronze (shown). The stand's base dimensions measure 4 feet (121cm) by 6 feet (183cm).
Customer feedback:
Customers widely praise the strength and easy installation of this stand. They reckon it offers great quality for its price and they like the way its color options held it blend into its surroundings.
The only downside we read about was the packaging the stand arrives in, which is not amazingly durable and can, on occasion, come apart a little during shipping.
Suitable for:
Buyers who do not have the necessary trees, poles or buildings to hang their Pawleys Island hammock from. Or those who like the idea of being able to move their bed around their outside space (a Pawleys stand wheel set is also available).
Expect to pay: US $179.99
Where to buy it: it is available on Amazon here.
You can also buy this stand from Pawleys Island direct and on eBay.

Hammock table

And finally, an ingenious Pawleys Island creation - a little 'bedside' table designed specifically for slumbering hammock owners.
Pawleys Island hammock table reviewMade specifically to sit alongside the company's steel hammock stands (see above), this table is easily installed into one leg of the Pawleys Island steel stand (its base slots into one of the stand's feet).
The result? Handy arm's-reach access to your book, newspaper, Kindle and/or drinks (the table's top actually includes two drink holders).
It is finished using the same attractive powder coating as the company's hammock stand (though in black only), and it even swivels, allowing you to drag it closer whenever the need to sup strikes. Ingenious.
Customer feedback:
Owners like the idea and design of this table. However they do mention two things: one claimed that moving the hammock stand around with the table attached was tricky, while another reported that the table wobbles a little if you have a large book and big drinks on there. Probably best recommended for light static use then.
Suitable for:
Pawleys Hammock owners who know where they want to relax (and stay there) and who truly value arm's reach convenience.
Expect to pay: around US $70.
Where to buy it: find it here.
You can also grab this table from Pawleys Island direct and it is often sold on eBay.

Other accessories

Additional Pawleys Island hammock accessories you might find interesting include:
  • A stand wheel kit
  • Hammock-ready pillows
  • Tree-friendly straps (instead of drilling holes for the tree hooks supplied)
  • Woven rope drink holder (this ties to your hammock or swing)
  • A hammock canopy (to create shade if you don't have trees)
  • Even a hammock rocking kit!
